Fado ao Centro
Experience a 150 year old music tradition from Portugal that triggers deep feelings with its melodies! The ensemble “Fado ao Centro“ presents urban and emotional Fado from Coimbra, a city known for its unique Fado tradition.
The male line-up stands out for its different guitar adjustments, transmitting warm acoustic colours that go deep into the heart of the audience. However, the members of the ensemble describe their passion for this music as follows: “Our real love for Fado lies deep in our souls and we would like to share this feeling with other people, whether it is with other musicians, local fans or with visitors, who probably have never heard anything about Fado from Coimbra“.
Generally, Fado is connected to Lisbon, the Portuguese capital city. But, the city of Coimbra – known mainly for its universities – has its own Fado tradition, that differs from the one from Lisbon by having only a male line-up playing guitars with different adjustments.
Some people say that Fado from Coimbra was developed by the Brasilian students, who came to Coimbra around 1860 and brought their own melodies. Others say that this form of music was introduced by students coming from Lisbon and that it changed when it arrived in Coimbra, giving its individual tone. Wherever its origin might be, even those who dont speak Portuguese cannot escape the deep feelings that arise with the sound of these melodies.
“Fado ao Centro“ was founded with the aim to deepen and continue with this 150 year old music tradition. This happens mostly with self-written songs that seek to renew the traditional repertoire.
