Let’s Groove & Move will be a series of events dedicated to creating space for dance, interaction and a deeper appreciation of the music and its history.
We continue to explore the sounds that have defined Let’s Groove events over the years as we embrace the diverse world of street dance that is inseparable from nightclub culture, community, and self-expression. Expect to experience different perspectives on the diverse styles, movements, rhythms, and histories that continue to evolve within street dance.
Each event will focus on a specific music genre, its foundations and street dance styles that are commonly associated with it.
The Movement: Every event will feature experienced dancers within styles associated with the focus genre. Through showcase battles and sessions, they will share the rhythm, technicality, feeling and intention behind the styles including Breaking, Popping, Locking, Hip Hop, and House.
The Social Floor: Let’s Groove & Move is meant to be a shared experience for everyone. Beyond the showcase battles, the dance floor is open, as it has always been, to everyone in the room. Cyphers, social dancing, and spontaneous moments remain the heartbeat of the night.
The Sound: The music played by the DJs will be in line with the focus genre. This will be through a musical selection of classic and defining records within the genre for both the showcase battles and the open dance floor, keeping everyone grooving and moving.
The Master of Ceremonies (MC): The important bridge between the music and the dance floor. The MC has always been more than just a voice on the mic, guiding the energy of the room, providing meaning and context behind the event, all while keeping everyone engaged and included.
Volume 1: The World of Funk
Funk is widely regarded as the foundation. Its syncopated drum breaks and heavy basslines didnt just provide a beat to dance to, they dictated how the body had to move. We will get into the Funk through the street dance styles of Popping and Locking. Locking captures the celebratory, upbeat groove of the early funk years, while Popping leans into the heavier, electronic "P-Funk" sounds that followed.

Campbellocking, also known as Locking, carries the spirit of the early funk scene and the political era of the civil right movements and the social party dances from the 60s & 70s. It can be seen as playful, expressive, and built around rhythm and character.
The “lock” was created by Don Campbell when he accidentally paused while doing a social party dance. You can recognize the style by its sharp pauses (locks) within fluid movement and social party steps, often combined with fast arm patterns, slaps, claps and acrobatic floorwork. It’s social, direct, and rooted in the feeling of the music and freedom.
Popping originated in California, particularly in cities like Fresno and Oakland. Although rooted within the funk and soul music scene, poppers today also dance to a wide range of electronic and hiphop beats.
Through the “pop” or “hit”, the dancer makes the rhythm visible by contracting and releasing the muscles in time with the beat. It is about feeling the "snap" in the music and making it visible to the eye. It can be sharp, smooth, or abstract, exploring everything from groove to illusion and texture within the music. The popping landscape encompasses various styles like tutting, animation, roboting, strutting, boogaloo, waving, scarecrow and more.
