171011 svenska Jazz Brothers kl 21.00
JJG, Jess Jacques Gersztenkorn

Jess Michel Gersztenkorn (Jess Koren) Sax

Jess Koren is one of the most eminent saxophonist, flutist jazz musician and educator living in Israel.
Born in France .From a musical family, my father sang with a deep voice, very inspired by Paul Robeson. I have studied the clarinet from the age of 9 years.
My brothers and sisters played an instrument, and the first recordings I heard in my early childhood were, Duke Ellington, Armstrong, Lester Young etc ... Self-taught on saxophone, I started playing jazz in my early teens with the Garvanoff brothers in Fontainebleau.
At the age of 18 played professionally with Rolf Buhrer at the Kentucky Club and in various jazz clubs of Paris, [the Huchette, Slow Club, le Chat qui peche, Lady Bird, and other clubs that existed in the sixties. there were memorable concerts and jams that took place at that time with some of the greatest jazz musicians resident or passing through Paris, Dexter Gordon, Don Byas, Johnny Griffin and others ... At that time there was no school of jazz, these musicians were our source of knowledge and inspiration always ready to give advice to young musicians that we were.
I was the substitute for the legendary Benny Waters at La Cigale, on weekends and played with Jack Butler band.
I worked for the U.S. Army in Europe at the officers clubs with some excellent European musicians and I learned a quantity of standards. I came for the first time in Israel just after the 6 Day War in 1967, there were very few jazz musicians at that time and so was a kind of a pioneer of jazz in this country.

In 1975 Jess has been invited to work in the Caribbean with Bernard Pollak who ran a hotel, himself a saxophonist, he founded a jazz club and invited musicians from New York, so Jess had the opportunity to play with people like Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Roland Hanna, Joe Newman. Attila Zoller, Frank Wess, Billy Taylor, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Gerry Mulligan, RoyHaynes, Chris Anderson. Recorded with Clifford Jordan and Wilbur Ware.
Then went to Sweden in 1976. Performing and teaching in Stockholm. After an engagement in Tahiti for a season, stay there 9 years [in search of the miraculous!!] teaching yoga and painting. After a short stay in the United States Jess returned to live in Israel in a 1985. Performing in clubs, concerts and teaching.
