Ballroom culture originated within Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities as a space for expression, resistance, and belonging. At its core, it celebrates inclusivity. Welcoming people of all identities, backgrounds, and appearances to participate and be seen.
What began as drag balls evolved into a vibrant culture of performance, fashion, and competition. One of its most iconic elements is voguing, a dance style inspired by the poses of fashion models in Vogue magazine. Since the 1960s, different styles have emerged, including Old Way, New Way, and Vogue Femme. Always delievered 100% attitude.
Ballroom gained wider recognition in the early 1990s through Madonna’s Vogue and the documentary Paris Is Burning, which offered an intimate look into the lives, struggles, and creativity of the New York ballroom scene.

Ballroom terms
Fem Queen – A trans woman
Butch Queen – A gay man
Butch Queen in Drag – A gay man presenting a female illusion
Chop – To be eliminated in a ball
Dip – A controlled drop to the floor during a performance (often miscalled “death drop”)
Tea – Gossip or the latest news
Shade – A subtle or witty insult, not always obvious at first
Virgin – Someone new to the scene, just starting to walk
Realness – The ability to present and be perceived as a certain identity in everyday society

Star – New to the scene but already gaining attention
Statement – Active for 5+ years and well established
Legend – 10+ years in the scene, widely respected for battles and wins
Icon – 20+ years in the scene, internationally recognized and often a leading figure or “parent” within the community
